The GRDM has prioritised improved water and sanitisation planning and is subsequently registered as a water service authority and water service provider. The District Bulk Water Master Plan investigates short-, medium- and long-term infrastructure developments, possible integration of water and wastewater schemes and long-term future planning, alternative technology and optimisation of future interventions.

PROJECTS INCLUDE:

  • water bottling
  • a mobile desalination plant,
  • processing of wastewater treatment bi-products (i.e organic manure)
  • smart metering and
  • biogas

Wastewater treatment capacity is exceeded in a number of bulk wastewater treatment facilities in the Garden Route District. Investment opportunities exist to upgrade inadequate waste management as it places an additional threat to critical water sources.
